Yuvi gets his big break

Chennai Dec. 4: The senior selection committee that met here at the TNCA sprang no surprises in the team selected to play against England in the two Tests at Chennai (Dec 11-15) and Mohali (19-23). Two changes were made from the squad that played against Australia at Nagpur with left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha replacing medium pacer R.P. Singh and Yuvraj Singh, as expected, coming in place of the retired Sourav Ganguly.

The meeting, convened by BCCI secretary N. Srinivasan and attended by captain M.S. Dhoni, spent much of its time deliberating over the last batting slot. S. Badrinath, who played three ODIs against Sri Lanka and was a part of the squad in the last series against Australia, clings to his place thanks to his two hundreds in his last two first class innings.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Suresh Raina had been seen as the possible challengers for that position. M. Vijay who opened against Australia was also named in the squad but will make way for Gautam Gambhir who is returning after serving a one-match ban, in the playing XI. Coach Gary Kirsten who is away in South Africa was not at the meeting.

With the batsmen picking themselves, it is up to the team management to choose the seven who will actually play. According to well placed sources Rahul Dravid will continue to bat at his usual position, which means there will be no place for Vijay.

While it is thought that the number six slot could be a toss-up between Yuvraj Singh and Badri, it does appear that Yuvi’s class and his particular liking for England bowling could see him emerge as the hot favourite to bat at number six. The Tamil Nadu duo could well sit out in their home Test. The last time two TN players played a Test at Chepauk was in 1988 against West Indies when Kris Srikkanth opened the batting and W.V. Raman made his debut as a middle-order batsman.

The bowling slots were straightforward picks. Ojha, who toured Sri Lanka, was dropped from the series against Australia to make way for Amit Mishra. Ojha’s return was imminent on Anil Kumble’s retirement.

The selectors were in favour of picking three spinners in the squad for a home series and an equal number of medium pacers. R.P. Singh, whose exclusion from the one-day team led to a bit of controversy, has not been in the best of rhythm. Munaf Patel who had a good outing in the ODIs against England was preferred ahead of R.P. Singh primarily because of an improved attitude.

The selectors also deemed it fit that Singh should play the Ranji Trophy and be match fit instead of warming the benches with the national team. Srikkanth and his colleagues did not have much choice but previous committees have blundered under similar circumstances. The Indian team is expected to arrive in batches from Sunday and will start preparation from December 8 (Monday).

The English team is scheduled to arrive on Monday. Officials from TNCA confirmed that all practice sessions will be held at the main ground.
Squad: M.S. Dhoni (c), Virender Sehwag (vc), Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, V.V.S. Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Amit Mishra, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, S. Badrinath, Munaf Patel, M. Vijay and Pragyan Ojha.

Team keen to play in India, says Pietersen

London Dec. 4: A full-strength England squad left for Abu Dhabi on Thursday with the cricket board giving its go ahead for the two-match Test series against India which was on the verge of being cancelled following the Mumbai terror attacks. “After spending the last 72 hours consulting security advisers and the government agencies at the highest level, the England and Wales Cricket Board has determined that England will leave for Abu Dhabi on Thursday to resume their two Test tour of India,” the ECB said in a statement. England captain Kevin Pietersen too expressed eagerness on behalf of his team to return to India to play the two-Test series.

Talking to the media before leaving for Abu Dhabi, Pietersen said the team was focused on playing and was keen to go to India to “show our support.”
“We’ve bought ourselves some more time in Abu Dhabi,” Pietersen said. “It’s very important that we go back, shoulder to shoulder with the Indian people in their time of need. What we want to do is show our support by hopefully playing some Test cricket. We will assess the situation on Sunday, but I am very confident that we will go to play a Test match next week in Chennai.

“The England team is keen to make amends for the 5-0 loss in the one-day series,” he added. The England Test squad will practice in Abu Dhabi along with nine members of the England performance squad and will fly on to India early next week for the two Test matches in Chennai and Mohali, subject to security recommendations by the ECB being implemented.

ECB security adviser Reg Dickason has insisted the BCCI put in place security recommendations for the safety of players. Although the ECB on Thursday refused to give details of security recommendations, a report in the Times newspaper said these included round-the-clock protection of the players by a commando unit and an evacuation plan.

The team captain and ECB officials said there was concern about reports of hijack alerts at Indian airports, especially in Chennai, the venue of their first Test match. “We need to find out the information surrounding that. I have spoken to our security team in Chennai already this morning. They are finding out the details around the alerts and when they get the information they will feed the information back to me and then I will provide that information to the board,” England Cricket managing director Hugh Morris said.

4-goal Tevez fires United into semis

Manchester (England), Dec. 4: Manchester United stormed into the League Cup semifinals in style as Carlos Tevez’s four-goal haul earned a 5-3 victory over Blackburn on Wednesday. Sir Alex Ferguson made 10 changes to the United team who won at Manchester City on Sunday but they were still too strong for Rovers at Old Trafford. Tevez was credited with the first goal nine minutes before the break, although Blackburn’s South Africa midfielder Aaron Mokoena was close to turning the ball into his own net.

Nani added a second goal five minutes before the interval from Tevez’s assistance before South African forward Benni McCarthy pulled one back within two minutes of coming on as a half-time substitute. Tevez grabbed his second from the spot in the 51st minute before completing his first hat-trick in English football by rounding off a move of real quality three minutes later. Matt Derbyshire and McCarthy struck in the final minutes to set up a dramatic finale but Tevez eased United through with his fourth goal in stoppage time.

It may have been a second string side, but United were well worth their victory and Ferguson was also able to give Paul Scholes a run out as the midfielder continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury. England goalkeeper Ben Foster had a couple of decent early touches as he pushed away Stephen Warnock’s header with just three minutes gone after Roque Santa Cruz and Derbyshire had flicked on Paul Robinson’s free-kick.
But soon United were in control, with Nani providing a constant threat on the left of United's three-man attack.

The Portuguese blasted over and had another effort blocked on the edge of the box before Darron Gibson had a header cleared off the line by Martin Olsson after he had beaten Robinson from Ryan Giggs’ corner.

Foster did well to hold a Keith Treacy shot that skidded off the turf and was quick off his line to force Warnock to lift the ball well over the bar after the former Liverpool man latched on to Derbyshire's lofted through-ball. But United were soon in front after poor Blackburn defending. Giggs lofted a free-kick from the right flank to the far post and Tevez beat Mokoena to the ball to bundle it home.

200 athletes to train for CWG 2010

New Delhi Dec. 4: A total of 200 athletes will be provided state-of-the-art training facilities and exposure to domestic and International competitions by the sports ministry to help them prepare well for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.  Under the “Preparation of Indian teams for Commonwealth Games 2010” scheme, the steering committee of the ministry approved the names of 200 atheletes, including 84 women, for inclusion in the “Core Group” of sportspersons.

Thirty-eight Indian coaches have also been approved in consultations with Amateur Athletic Federation of India (AAFI).  The federation has been asked to furnish the panel of names of foreign coaches. The steering committee also approved the names of one Physiotherapist, two Masseur and two Masseusen and has asked the Amateur Athletic Federation of India for submitting the names of the remaining support personnel. The committee also directed the Amateur Athletic Federation of India to prepare the annual calendar of training and competitions for 305 days, in consultation with the ministry.
